As I listen to the radio over the years, I notice, at least here in Southern California, that besides the usual hucksters barking at me to " BUY GOLD " , I am hearing more and more ads trying to sell me so called " brain supplements," to counter the alleged " mental deterioration" that accompanies old age. One particularly offensive ad features a woman, claiming to be 55 years old a year younger than I am who whimpers about her as she puts it " mental fog" and how it has been eliminated by the product advertised..At 56, I am finding that, if anything, my memory, mental acuity, and ability to absorb and retain large amounts of information is stronger than ever. Eight months ago, I pulled my dusty old college calculus textbook of the shelf and started working through it again from the very beginning, and I am now working on Fourier Analysis and Partial Differential Eqns. I am also reviving my youthful interest in Mandarin Chinese, and drill myself daily with flash cards with the four thousand most commonly used ideograms later, I will attempt Cantonese and or Arabic . .In short, I am now studying more intensely and, similtaneously, more easily than ever before and retaining it all.So my double question is Is age inevitably the start of mental decline and do these " herbal supplements" to " improve brain function" the commercials are always vague about precisely what the products will do really help or are they just a fraud designed to get money out of us 'baby boomers?' Thanx, folks .P.S. Now, if I could just find a supplement to cure my REAL problem, the one concerning my . . . uh, " little buddy " Any suggestions?
